Yes, the title is a Top Gun reference. XD

Well, for me, this picture is one first after another:

* first drawing done 100% by mouse (no scanned line art)
* first serious attempt at a background (yay clouds! o.O)
* first drawing done completely in one day
* first full drawing to take less than 10 hours ^^;
* first drawing to not have its line art posted! :wow:

I'm sure there's others. They'll come to me.

I think it's very easy to see that this is a completely change of style for me. I used an oekaki rather than GIMP, and while it certainly has some advantages (some rather significant), I don't think I like the fact that the whole thing looks like a scribble. -_-

Cliche'd pose, I know, but the real focus here was on the background. Ironically, the whole sunset + clouds probably took less than 20% of the entire time spent on this piece... Go figure. XD

Random colors. They looked better when I started. ^^;

Excuse the random white lines around the arms/legs and stuff. Since I didn't shade this, they would have blended into the body without those. :P

Oh, yeah, and if you care to watch this being drawn, you can look at [link] . Exciting stuff. XD (Note: stroke 30 is loooooong. Consider doing something for about five minutes at this point in time. o.O)

Time: 4 hours.

Comments/critiques appreciated. Especially if you watch the recording and let me know how I could improve at actually drawing. :)

The perspective on this is excellent :) I love the colours too

Heh, yeah, I guess this drawing has its good points, huh? :) It was never intended to be anything spectacular, and it looks like a 5-year-old drew it, but you're right about the perspective. I actually hadn't paid much attention to that. I like uncommon perspectives. :D

WOW you did that all with a mouse. I'm impressed. When I try using a mouse my lines jump all over the place and it's not pretty. Nice work! ^^

Yeah, it wasn't particularly easy, and I'm sure the quality suffered somewhat thanks to my lack of any real lineart, but I'm glad I was able to do a straight-mouse drawing finally. XD

Thanks. :)

Thank you. :) I wish they were more visible... The dragon 's wings are covering them up. XD

I saw this on the board. :) I think it turned out rather well.
The color balance is my favorite aspect of the picture. You centered it on those warm colors nicely, with the reds and yellows, so the purple on the dragon stands out well. The title is quite applicable, too. The wings leave a strong impression.

To prevent things from looking like scribbles, the most important thing it to get used to the different tools. For instance, it can be easier to use flat colors with the pen tool, rather than the watercolor one. Each tool has it's own strengths and weaknesses. :)

Keeping to warm colors wasn't particularly intentional (I'm not a good enough artist to really concern myself with how well the colors go together. I'm still working on shading, for crying out loud ^^;), but I do like how it turned out... Nothing like how I envisioned the picture to be, of course. XD But, hey, if drawing a sunset scene helps me keep to a warm pallet, then I'm all for it. ;)

Heh, yeah, I thought so too. :) Which is probably why I ended up with this title... Though, to be honest, it was mostly random. I suppose the title would fit better if I had done a better job on the wings; as it is, the title is more of a theme, I suppose. A reflection of the feeling you would get if I had drawn it better. XD

Yeah, sticking with watercolors the whole way through obviously turned out to be a bad move. ^^; I just enjoyed them too much after doing the background. But it isn't a good tool for details, and it isn't a good tool for flat areas of color... But hopefully I'll learn from this. XD I could just say that this was an experiment on the watercolor tool, just as my first picture on the board was an experiment in the pencil tool. ^^;

Wow, thats really cool pose, seeing it from a different perspective...the clouds look really nice; the whole sky does :) All I would say that I notice, is that the right wing (left on the dragon) looks a bit too small, and that maybe the hind hands/ claws should be altered a bit, but really, great job! Great colors... :)
